Avatar Aang

Avatar Aang is fated to restore balance and unite the four warring nations of Earth.

Avatar Aang, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Nickolodeon, Nickelodeon Animation Studios, Zach Tyler“I need to ask you something.  Please, come closer.  Will you go penguin-sledding with me?  What’s going on here?  I’m not sure.  Ah!  Uh!  Uh!  Ah!  Appa, are you all right?  Wake up, buddy.  Unh!  Unh!  Ha ha!  You’re ok.  This is Appa, my flying bison.  Look out!  Don’t worry.  It’ll wash out.  So, do you guys live around here?  I’m– ah!  Ah!  Ah!  Ah!  Ah!  Ah-choo!  I’m Aang.  Really?  It felt higher than that.  Sure am.  Well, if you guys are stuck, Appa and I can give you a lift.  Ok.  First-time flyers, hold on tight.  Appa, yip yip.  Come on, Appa, yip yip.  Appa’s a just tired.  A little rest and he’ll be soaring through the sky.  You’ll see.  Oh.  I was smiling?” — Avatar Aang

“Hey.  What are you thinking about?  Uh… no.  I didn’t know him.  I mean, I knew people that knew him.  But I didn’t.  Sorry.  Ahh!  Aah!  Ah!  Aah!  Uh… why are they all looking at me like that?  Did Appa sneeze on me?  Extinct?  It’s not for stabbing.  It’s for airbending.  Not magic, airbending.  It lets me control the air currents around my glider and fly.  Check again!  Unh!  Uh!  Uh!  You’re a waterbender!  See?  Now my tongue is stuck to my staff!  Wow!  Everything freezes in there.  What war?  What are you talking about?  Penguin!  Oh!  Ha!  Ha!  Hey, come on, little guy.  Wanna go sledding?  Unh!  I have a way with animals.  Yack!  Yack!  Yack!  Yack!  Yack!  You got a deal.  Just one little problem.  I’m an airbender, not a waterbender.  Isn’t there someone in your tribe who can teach you?  This isn’t right.  A waterbender needs to master water.  What about the north pole?  There’s another water tribe up there. right?  Maybe they have waterbenders who could teach you.  But you forget.  I have a flying bison.  Appa and I can personally fly you to the North Pole.  Katara, we’re gonna find you a master.  Well, you think about it.  But in the meantime, can you teach me to catch one of these penguins?  Ha!  Ha!  Ha!  Ha!  Aah!  Ha!  Ha!  Yeah!  Ha!  Ha!  Yeah!  Ha ha ha ha!  You still are a kid.  Whoa.  What is that?” — Avatar Aang

“If you want to be a bender, you have to let go of fear.  Ok.  Back up.  I have friends all over the world, even in the fire nation.  I’ve never seen any war.  I don’t know.  A few days maybe.  What?  That’s  impossible.  Do I look like a 112-year old man to you?  A hundred years.  I can’t believe it.  I did get to meet you.  Huh?  What’s that you said about booby traps?  Uh-oh.  Hold on tight!” — Avatar Aang

Katara, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Nickolodeon, Nickelodeon Animation Studios, Mae WhitmanKatara

“Water.  Earth.  Fire.  Air.  My grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days– a time of peace, when the avatar kept balance between water tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads.  But that all changed when the Fire Nation attacked.  Only the Avatar mastered all four elements.  Only he could stop the ruthless firebenders.  But when the world needed him most, he vanished.  A hundred years have passed and the fire nation is nearing victory in the war.  Two years ago, my father and the men of my tribe journeyed to the Earth Kingdom to help fight against the Fire Nation, leaving me and my brother to look after our tribe.  Some people believe that the Avatar was never born into the Air Nomads, and that the cycle is broken.  But I haven’t lost hope.  I still believe that somehow the Avatar will return to save the world.” — Katara

“Sokka, look!  But, Sokka, I caught one.  Hey!  Aah!  Ohh.  It’s not magic.  It’s waterbending.  And it’s– you’re calling me weird?  I’m not the one who makes muscles at myself every time I see my reflection in the water.  Go left!  Go left!  Aah!  You call that left?  So it’s my fault.  You are the most sexist, immature, nutbrained– ah!  I’m embarrassed to be related to you!  Ever since mom died, I’ve been doing all the work around camp, while you’ve been off playing soldier.  I even wash all the clothes.  Have you ever smelled dirty socks?  Let me tell you.  Not pleasant!  No!  That’s it,  I’m done helping you.  From now on, you’re on your own!  Oh!  Aah!  You mean, I did that?  Oh!  Ah!  He’s alive.  We have to help.  Uh!  Uh!  Uh!  Uh!  Aah!  Ah!  Stop it!  Mmm… ah!  What?  What is it?  Ah… sure!  I guess.  Oh, yeah.  I’m sure he’s a spy for the fire navy.  You can tell by that evil look in his eye.  The paranoid one is my brother Sokka.  You never told us your name.  Oh!  You’re an airbender.  We’d love a ride.  Thanks.  Are you hoping some other kind of monster will come along and give you a ride home?  You know, before you freeze to death.  Why are you smiling at me like that?” — Katara

“Hey.  I guess I was wondering.  You being an airbender and all… if you had any idea what happened to the Avatar.  Ok.  Just curious.  Good night.  Sleep tight.  Aang.  Aang, wake up!  It’s ok.  We’re in the village now.  Come on, get ready.  Everyone’s waiting to meet you.  Oh!  Aang, this is the entire village.  Entire village, Aang.  Aang, this is my grandmother.  That was amazing.  Well, sort of.  Not yet.” — Katara

“I told you.  He’s the real thing, gran gran.  I finally found the bender to teach me.  But he’s special.  I can tell.  I sense he’s filled with so much wisdom.  Gran gran said he disappeared over an hour ago.  Ha!  Ha!  Ha!  Aang!  Ha ha ha!  Aang, I’ll help you catch a penguin if you teach me waterbending.  No.  You’re looking at the only waterbender in the whole south pole.  Maybe, but we haven’t had contact with our sister tribe in a long time.  It’s not exactly turn right at the second glacier.  It’s on the other side of the world.  That’s– I mean… I don’t know,  I’ve never left home before.  Ok.  Listen closely, my young pupil.  Catching penguins is an ancient and sacred art.  Observe.  Whoo!  I haven’t done this since I was a kid.  A fire navy ship and a very bad memory for my people.  Aang, stop.  We’re not allowed to go near it.  The ship could be booby-trapped.  This ship is haunted by tribes since gran gran was a little girl.  It was a part of the Fire Nation’s first attacks.  Aang, how long were you in that iceberg?  I think it was more like a hundred years.  Think about it.  The war is a century old.  You don’t know about it, because somehow you were in there that whole time.  It’s the only explanation.  I’m sorry, Aang.  Maybe, somehow, there’s a bright side to all this.  Come on.  Let’s get out of here.  Aang, let’s head back.  This place is creepy.  Aah!” — Katara

“Water, earth, fire, air… long ago, the 4 nations lived together in harmony.  Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked.  Only the Avatar, master of all 4 elements, could stop them.  But when the world needed him most, he vanished.  100 years passed, and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an Airbender named Aang.  And although his Airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he’s ready to save anyone.  But I believe Aang can save the world.” — Katara

Sokka, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Nickolodeon, Nickelodeon Animation Studios, Jack De SenaSokka

“It’s not getting away from me this time.  Watch and learn Katara.  This is how you catch a fish.  Shh, Katara.  You’re gonna scare it away.  Mm.  I can already smell it cooking.  Why is it that every time you play with magic water, I get soaked?  Yeah, yeah– an ancient art unique to our culture, blah, blah, blah… look, I’m just saying that if I had weird powers, I’d keep my weirdness to myself.  Aah!  Aah!  Aah!  You don’t like my steering.  Well, maybe you should have waterbended us out of the ice.  I knew I should have left you home.  Leave it to a girl to screw things up.  Ah… Katara… Katara!  Settle down!  Aah!  Ok.  You’ve gone from weird to freakish, Katara.  Yep.  Congratulations.  Oh!  Uh!  Katara!  Get back here!  We don’t know what that thing is.  Stop!  Uh!  Uh!  You tell us!  How did you get in the ice?  And why aren’t you frozen?  Aah!  What is that thing?  Right.  And this is Katara, my flying sister.  Oh!  Ugh!  Ugh!  Agh!  Agh!  Agh!  Don’t answer that.  Did you see that crazy bolt of light?  He was probably trying to signal the fire navy.  You just sneezed and flew 10 feet in the air.  Giant light beams, flying bison, airbenders– I think I got midnight sun madness.  I’m going home where stuff makes sense.  Oh, no!  I am not getting on that fluffy snot monster.  Ah– wow, that was truly amazing.  Argh!” — Sokka

“What is this, a weapon?  You can’t stab anything with this?  Ah!  You know, last time I checked, humans can’t fly.  Oh!  My watchtower.  Uh!  Great.  You’re an airbender, Katara’s a waterbender.  Together you can just waste time all day long.  Now, men, it’s important that you show no fear when you face a firebender.  In the water tribe, we fight till the last man’s standing.  For without courage, how can we call ourselves men?  Listen!  Until your fathers return from the war, they’re counting on you to be the men of this tribe.  And that means, no potty breaks.  Ok.  Who else has to go?  Uh!  Have you seen Aang?  Ah!  Katara, get him out of here.  This lesson is for warriors only.  Stop!  Stop it right now!  What’s wrong with you?  We don’t have time for fun and games with a war going on!  You’re kidding, right?  He’s kidding right?” — Sokka

Prince Zuko, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Nickolodeon, Nickelodeon Animation Studios, Dante BascoPrince Zuko

“Finally.  Uncle, do you realize what this means?  It means my search is about to come to an end.  That light came from an incredibly powerful source.  It has to be him.  I don’t need any calming tea!  I need to capture the Avatar!  Helmsmen, head a course for the light.” — Zuko

“Because their honor didn’t hinge on the Avatar’s capture.  Mine does.  This coward’s hundred years in hiding are over.” — Zuko

“Ah!  Hiyah!  Enough.  I’ve been drilling this sequence all day.  Teach me the next set.  I’m more than ready.  Ahh!  Hiya!  The sages tell us that the Avatar is the last airbender.  He must be over a hundred years old by now.  He’s had a century to master the four elements.  I’ll need more than basic firebending to defeat him.  You will teach me the advanced set.” — Zuko

“The last Airbender.  Quite agile for his old age.  Wake my uncle!  Tell him I found the Avatar.  As well as his hiding place.” — Zuko

Uncle Iroh, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Nickolodeon, Nickelodeon Animation Studios, MakoUncle Iroh

“I won’t get to finish my game?  Ahh… or it’s just the celestial lights.  We’ve been down this road before, Prince Zuko.  I don’t want you to get too excited over nothing.  Please, sit.  Why don’t you enjoy a cup of calming jasmine tea?”

“I’m going to bed now.  Yep.  A man needs his rest.  Prince Zuko, you need some sleep.  Even if you’re right and the Avatar is alive, you won’t find him.  Your father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all tried and failed.”

“Again.  Ahh.  No!  Power and firebending come from breath, not the muscles.  The breath becomes energy in the body.  The energy extends past your limbs and becomes fire!  Get it right this time.  No!  You’re impatient.  You have yet to master your basics.  Drill it again.  Very well.  But first, I must finish my roast duck.  Yum, yum, yum.”

BIG NEWS. Very excited to be able to share this. And very excited to be working with Mike again on this simultaneously new and old adventure. Give him a follow too if you haven’t already, as we chronicle this journey: @mike_dante_d Here is our quote from the press release: "We're thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. We can't wait to realize Aang's world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast. It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone's great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building. Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling, and we're incredibly grateful to be partnering with them." — Bryan Konietzko & Michael DiMartino 💙 Huge thanks to John Staub @johnstaubart for this beautiful concept art. More later, but for now, link in bio. — Love, Bryan #avatarthelastairbender #netflix #liveaction #series #adaptation

I found these slides from the end of my presentation at our last NYCC towards the end of Korra. The first drawing is of me and Mike DiMartino in the little studio room at the front of the house I lived in, not too far from Nickelodeon in Burbank. This is where we worked together on our Avatar pitch over an intense and fruitful two-week period. Twelve years later (second slide) and we were wrapping up the second series, having worked with hundreds of amazing people on two incredibly challenging series to produce 113 episodes total. At that time, we both needed a break from TV, though sure enough, some years later we got pulled back in… I heard this week that the original series is coming back to Netflix in May. It was on there a long time ago, maybe in 2009 or so, and it found a really huge audience as a result, which was amazing. I’m glad it’s going to be more accessible for people once again. As always, thanks for taking this journey with us. 💙⬇️💙 #avatarthelastairbender #thelegendofkorra #bryke #nickelodeon #netflix

Mike and Brandon walking between meetings from a short while back… We’re moving into a new office space, transitioning into the next phase of production. Our core team is growing. We’re writing, planning, and testing. Though there’s plenty that’s new for us in this live action process, we’ve been on this long rollercoaster ride twice before and a lot of the climbs and twists and turns feel familiar. Right now, everything seems slow, and we’re itching to speed up; before we know it, everything will be moving too fast and happening all at once. For those who are eager to see this new series and are asking if we have a trailer yet: thank you for your enthusiasm, sincerely, but you wouldn’t want to see a version of this series that was made within 9 months. Too much Hollywood fare is fast-tracked and the results speak for themselves. Thankfully for us and this series, Netflix is committed to doing it right. We’re trying to make something special that will stand the test of time. A live-action Avatar series is a daunting, incredibly complex thing to pull off — a fantasy travel show with tons of VFX, CG creatures, martial arts, etc. — and to do it right takes a ton of planning. On both the original series and Korra, when we were at this stage in the production the projects hadn’t even been announced yet. The difference with this Netflix series is that you all heard about it just a little bit after we started. So it will seem like a longer wait, but we can assure you that everyone is making good use of that time so we can craft something beautiful and emotionally powerful. Also, so we can make sure Appa is cute. We’ll be starting the casting process before too long, so if you’re aspiring to be a part of this thing, keep taking acting lessons and some martial arts/movement classes. We’ll announce how, when, and where to audition soon-ish. Thanks! Love, Bryan ✨💙✨ #avatarthelastairbender #netflix #liveactionseries
