Why?

That’s what he was asking him-self.

Why?

Why was his father so violent?

And Why — didn’t — he become violent?

He wasn’t as interested in who, when, where, or what: but why.  To answer the why, he also had to come up with the how — individuals become violent.

In asking these why questions, and researching for answers, he ended up with a useful and profound answer.

His answer is on the nature and nurture of the SELF: The Self as Soliloquy. And we all have a SELF.

The Talent Scout

It was three o’clock in morning, a cold winter day in New York City, he had left the Jazz club, and turned on the radio in his car.

He scanned the radio stations, listening.  Then he heard it.

It was something new.

He knew natural talent when he heard it.

His ear was incomparable and he knew who and how to promote them.

From Billie Holiday to Bennie Goodman to Pete Seeger to Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen: generations of musicians. The Ultimate HIP.

But he looked like a square.

Natural Woman

She is a Natural.  It was inborn.  She had the gift from the beginning.

It’s called Temperament.

She is a Songbird, and a Natural Woman.

It is embedded in the warp and woof of her make, she is a Tapestry.

Ever changing and ever staying the same.  Many hues and colors, textures, and feelings.

Intergalactic Synergy

NERDS REJOICE: The largest media conglomerate in the world (Disney) bought Lucasfilm last week and immediately announced that a fresh new trilogy of Star Wars films WILL BE HAPPENING starting with an Episode VII in 2015.  Yesterday it was confirmed that Oscar winning screenwriter Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3) has been hired to pen Episode VII as the film begins pre-production.  No word yet on who will direct or be cast in the films but personally I am optimistic, as Hayden Christensen already ruined one trilogy and will not be allowed to ruin another.

The new triumvirate of films will reportedly focus on the rebuilding of the Republic, with an aged Luke Skywalker becoming the premier Jedi and training a new order of Jedi Knights.  The series will reportedly culminate in a final confrontation between Skywalker and the Emperor.  Obviously many of the overarching plotlines have yet to be imagined:

Another epic storyline with four main characters? NO WAY!  You must be saying.  Let’s take a look.

The Norman Conquests

Norman?!
Norman!?
Norman!!

“A man with my type of temperament should really get through three women a day without even ruffling his hair. That’s what I’m like inside. That’s my appetite. That’s me. I’m a three a day man.”  — Norman Dewars

It’s comedy of life.

Norman Conquests: a trilogy of plays written in 1973 by Alan Ayckbourn. The plays are at times wildly comic, and at times poignant in their portrayals of the relationships among six characters. Each of the plays depicts the same six characters over the same weekend in a different part of a house. Table Manners is set in the dining room, Living Together in the living room, and Round and Round the Garden in the garden. Each play is self-contained, and they may be watched in any order. Some of the scenes overlap, and on several occasions a character’s exit from one play corresponds with an entrance in another. The plays are centered around Norman Dewars, an fun loving Artisan.

It’s fiction, but …

Tactician’s Pact

The summer of the movie nerd sadly is long gone my friends and so Cloud Atlas, Skyfall, Lincoln and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will have to suffice for the holiday season.  Skyfall specifically is lookin pretty bossy though especially in this new trailer:

After 50 years of the franchise, Skyfall is already being called the ‘best Bond yet’.  Daniel Craig is said to have truly stepped into his role as a more nitty-gritty James Bond, and Academy Award Winner Javier Bardem is said to shine in his role as unhinged arch-criminal Silva.

Something tells me he loses though.  And Bond wins.  Just a hunch.  Why does Bond win all the time?  Well I guess some people are just born that way.  Bond seems to find out though, as we all do: that life’s greatest gift, can sometimes be a curse.  Let’s take a look.

What a Wonderful World

His singing was gravelly and raspy.

He hadn’t been allowed in the front door of opportunity.

I see trees of green…….. red roses too
I see em bloom….. for me and for you
And I think to myself.… what a wonderful world.

He had worked hard all his life.

But he didn’t care

His work was fun, for he was the ultimate Entertainer.

He sang and played in a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue….. clouds of white
Bright blessed days….dark sacred nights
And I think to myself …..what a wonderful world.

For a man who knew the Blues…  The Blues of the Segregrated South.

And Boy, that man could blow that Gabriel horn.

Where in the world did all that Jass come from?

Super Brawl

A Justice League of America film will now officially compete directly with The Avenger’s  2 in the summer of 2015.  Warner Bros. green lit the project and will reportedly ramp up development on it following a decisive legal victory involving the rights to Superman.  Opening the door for competing super squads of epic proportion.  A CLASH OF TITANS if you will.  Okay.  Maybe I got a little excited there.  It is looking pretty legit though as DC/Warner Bros. has made it clear they want a high caliber director at the helm.  As for the cast, let’s hope they go for a little more depth than Megan Fox.  Why does WB want a super-squad of it’s own?  Perhaps a better question is: Why WOULDN’T they want a super-squad of their own.

Can Batman go toe-to-toe with The Hulk? Could Superman beat up Captain America?  I don’t know.  I’m not a rocket scientist.  The two superhero teams will indeed clash at the box office in the summer of 2015, as Warner Bros. looks to sign a director and all star cast within the near future.  Having had talks with The Wachowski Brothers and Ben Affleck about directing, it seems they are willing to spend a pretty penny on bringing a Hall of Justice to the big screen in top class fashion.  Why are all the cool kids making movies about superhero teams these days?  Because effective team synergy is a powerful thing.  Let’s take a look.

What a Pair

Charlie: I don’t blame you for being scared, Miss, not one little bit. Ain’t no person in their right mind ain’t scared of white water.
Rose: I never dreamed that any mere physical experience could be so stimulating!
Charlie: How’s that, Miss?
Rose: I’ve only known such excitement a few times before – a few times in my dear brother’s sermons when the spirit was really upon him…I must say I’m filled with admiration for your skill, Mr. Allnut. Do you suppose I’ll try practice steering a bit that someday I might try? I can hardly wait… Now that I’ve had a taste of it

A Gentle Lion

Once upon a time, in the land of Oz, four characters set out on a strange and difficult journey. Each was lacking something essential in life, and each wanted to find the mighty Wizard of Oz and ask him for his help.

• Dorothy had lost her way home, and she wanted the Wizard to return her safely back to her Aunt and Uncle’s farm. “There’s no place like home,” she said.

• The Tin Woodman was stiff with rust, and he wanted the Wizard to give him a warm, loving heart beating in his chest. “No one can love who has no heart,” he sighed.

• The Scarecrow’s head was stuffed with straw, and he wanted the Wizard to give him a brain. “Brains are the only things worth having in this world,” he said.

• The Lion had lost his nerve, and he wanted the Wizard to give him back his courage. “As long as I know myself to be a coward I shall be unhappy,” he said.

Home, Heart, Brain, and Courage.  The Four Temperaments: Home for Guardian, Heart for Idealist, Brain for Rational, and Courage for Artisan.

He was big man.

He was courageous.

He was fun loving.

He was an All-Pro Defensive Tackle.

He once was a Lion too. A Detroit Lion.
