Crucial Point

It is a popular Western view to say Crisis in Chinese is a simple combination of danger and opportunity.  But that is not exactly correct.  It’s a little more complicated.

Crisis

Chinese philologist Victor H. Mair of the University of Pennsylvania calls the popular interpretation of wēijī in the English-speaking world a “widespread public misperception.” Mair suggests that  in wēijī is closer to “crucial point” than to “opportunity.”

Nevertheless, They can relate to either interpretation.

They struggled much of their young lives, very close to danger and no opportunity before the crucial pointwhen the opportunity was encountered and made, by hard work and being very smart TOGETHER.

The Danger has passed.  Now, China is the land of Opportunity for those who have the right combination and the right timing  — and…

They do.

Tactician's Allure

The new year is upon us my dear friends and with it comes the 2013 awards season, and a whole new year in cinema.  And somehow all the stupid crap I pulled last year is dead and gone now and I have a whole year to pull an entirely new set of crap.  Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Oz the Great and Powerful, Man of Steel, The Wolverine, Sin City 2, jOBS, and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug are among those to look forward to in 2013.

Les Misérables and Argo are Golden Globe favorites alongside Lincoln and Zero Dark ThirtyBaz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby might give hip hip mogul Jay-Z his first Oscar, as he was recently hired to score the film.  Luhrmann is known for Moulin Rouge and Romeo & Juliet, two films in which he also used contemporary music in a period film.

Based on the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby takes us back to the roaring twenties, focusing on titular character Jay Gatsby (Leonardo Dicaprio): a legendary charming, confident, ambitious and lavish hero of the post World War I era.  Nobody is perfect as it turns out, as main character Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) starts to unravel Gatsby’s true nature.  Carraway’s obsession with Gatsby is representative of humanity’s attraction to fame, glamour, and the spectacle of the Artisan: Let’s take a look

Tactician’s Swagger

Yes.  I used the word swagger.  The next James Bond film entitled Skyfall is now up and running and currently filming in Shanghai after a slight budget debacle involving MGM studios filing for bankruptcy.  Those silly suds seem to have gotten back on track however as Skyfall is slated for an November 9, 2012 release date.  Daniel Craig will reprise his role as the world’s best secret agent, with Academy Award winning director Sam Mendes (American Beauty) at the helm, academy award winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) playing the primary villain, and equally not-terrible actors Ralph Phiennes and Albert Finney cast in unspecified roles.  The 23rd installment of the world’s longest running movie franchise will see “MI6 come under attack, revealing M’s (Judi Dench) dark past and testing 007’s (Daniel Craig) loyalty to her as he goes after the threat no matter the cost”.  Who is Bond… James Bond?  The ultimate Promoter Artisan.

Tacticians’ Skirmish

With the summer creeping up and nerd-tastic San Diego Comic-Con approaching rapidly I think it’s high time we talked about the most anticipated film of 2012: The Dark Knight Rises.  Christopher Nolan screened a four hour rough cut of the film recently for Warner Bros. meaning that the film does actually exist and it’s not all a big hoaxThe Dark Knight Rises itself will be dropping a week after San Diego’s most coveted nerd festival ends (July 20) so people are speculating that the man himself Christopher Nolan will be making a personal appearanceGotham enthusiasts speculate that a fresh new trailer should hit soon so stay posted.  What exactly is The Dark Knight Rises all about you ask?  Well basically, two Artisans going at it.  Or more specifically, two Tactical Operators.  Let’s take a look shall we.

Tactician's Tournament

Last night marked the Season Premiere of Celebrity Apprentice, the long-running reality competition series in which washed-up celebrities compete against one another in a variety of business related tasks.  This season certainly has it’s share of vibrant celebrity personalities, with the likes of: Arsenio Hall, Clay Aiken, Dee Snider, Victoria Gotti, and Debbie Gibson.  By far the best part of the show of course is when Trump fires all of these idiots, because he does so personally, and he alone decides who to fire when and why.  The first episode of the season certainly didn’t disappoint, as Orange County Choppers owner Paul Teutul Sr. raised just over $490,000 in one day for the Make-A-Wish foundation, while former supermodel Cheryl Tiegs was the first to get fired.  Despite his arrogance, Trump is one smart guy so let’s take a look at the man himself.

The Inventor

Who Invents?

Who should get the credit for the Invention?

When does the Invention occur?

How does the Invention happen?

What is Invention?

As they walked along the shore, two very competitive guys: both “filthy rich” by anyone’s standard, both had disrupted established giant corporations, and created their own companies, changing the world significantly.

He pulled him close such that they went nose to nose

“Larry, this is why it’s really important that I’m your friend.  You don’t need any more money.”

Both were kind of inventors, but they were different in Temperament, and completely different goals in life.  Larry is a Promoter Artisan and he keeps score by money: his interest was in winning.  He loved the fact that he used IBM’s own research to beat them in database software, making himself fabulously wealthy.

For Steve, he was competitive in a completely different way. It wasn’t about the money or the winning.  Rather, it was about his legacy: his company.

He hadn’t changed his passion. Long ago, he had seen a way to start making cool things, inventions, that were useful, that he wanted to use — like he had started several decades before with another friend, the Woz.

Tactical Disunity

Effervescent songstress Katy Perry and washed-up British imbecile Russell Brand officially ended their marriage recently and one wonders what in the world took so long.  The break-up reportedly stemmed from the couple heading in opposite directions as Perry‘s career is beginning to skyrocket, and Brand‘s is well, not.  Brand has had mild success recently in the American film industry with movies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek and the more recent Arthur.  In all three films he essentially plays the same washed-up, arrogant, promiscuous, out-of-control, no-talent moron and it’s like he doesn’t even have to act.  It just comes naturally for him.  Katy on the other hand catapulted into super-stardom this past year with five #1 billboard singles from the same album (Teenage Dream), being the first female artist to attain such an accolade (the only other being Michael Jackson).  The couple neglected to sign a pre-nuptial agreement, meaning that Brand stands to gain upwards of $20 million from the divorce.  I think the overall lesson we should learn from this is that dating the “bad boy” can go a little far in the form of an eccentric foreign ex heroin/sex addict who just took $20 million from you.  Lesson learned.  Let’s however hope for the best and take a closer look at this former Hollywood power couple.

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson grew up in a strong Christian family in Santa Barbara California the daughter of two Pastors.  Originally a Christian artist, Perry rose to stardom by pushing the envelope in the pop/rock genre.  Perry’s breakout single “I Kissed a Girl” had a racy and mischievous tone, and pushed her 2008 album One of the Boys into the American Top Ten.  Perry is characterized by her borderline-controversial lyrics and outrageous fashion sense.  Bold, daring, audacious and extremely hard-working Katy Perry is undoubtedly a Promoter Artisan.  Indeed Katy is charming, confident, and popular and has made a career out of being artistically bold and edgy.  Katy however found out firsthand (as most Promoters do) that “[s]he who travels fast, travels alone“, as her booming success was likely the primary source of tension for the former couple.

Russell Edward Brand is an English comedian, actor, columnist, singer, author, and radio/television presenter.  Brand is known for being eccentric and controversial, and as a result has been dismissed from several large media corporations including BBC and MTV.  Brand‘s prior drug use, alcoholism, and promiscuity serve as a cornerstone for most of his comedic material and public image.  Playful, fun-loving, expressive, energetic and uninhibited Russell Brand is undoubtedly a Performer Artisan.  Indeed Brand (like many of his fellow Performers) is especially subject to temptations, and is inclined to be impulsive and self-indulgent, as evidenced by his past addictions and promiscuity.  Indeed Brand takes to heart the idea that “nothing is so serious or sacred that it can’t be made fun of“.  Though his “talent for enjoying life is healthy for the most part“, his “tolerance for anxiety is the lowest of all types“, resulting in his filing for divorce December 30th 2011 due to “irreconcilable differences”.

“Two SPs live primarily in the same world, the world of external, physical reality, speaking the same language of concrete objects, and they also share each other’s childlike love of fun and excitement.  Two SPs have so many interests and activities in common—travel, sports, parties, shows, clothes, and so on—that they can come together as playmates in a way not possible with persons of other temperament.  The only problem is that, with both partners living and playing so hard—going so fast in the same direction—they can quickly exhaust each other and lose interest.  This pattern of two Artisans lighting up the sky brightly and then burning out and falling apart is a familiar one.”  Please Understand Me II, p. 219

Brutal Tacticians

The Dark Knight Rises wrapped principal photography in New York last week and in a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Christopher Nolan discussed his final Batman film.  Nolan revealed that the films’ events will be taking place 8 years after the events of the previous film, during a time when Bruce Wayne is “not in a great state”.  He also talked about choosing Bane as the primary villain, saying that the goal was to test Batman both physically AND mentally.  Since Bruce went and got everyone excited by going to ninja school in Batman Begins, some critics were largely disappointed with the lack of martial arts in The Dark Knight, which evidently will not be a problem in this film:

“He [Bane] is brutal. Brutal. He’s a big dude who’s incredibly clinical, in the fact that he has a result-based and oriented fighting style. It’s not about fighting. It’s about carnage. The style is heavy-handed, heavy-footed, it’s nasty. Anything from small-joint manipulation to crushing skulls, crushing rib cages, stamping on shins and knees and necks and collarbones and snapping heads off and tearing his fists through chests, ripping out spinal columns. He is a terrorist in mentality as well as brutal action.” — Christopher Nolan

Well that sounds pretty dope Mr. Nolan.  Thankyou for that.  I think we’re all glad to see that this Batman franchise is finally headed in the right direction.  The direction of ripping out peoples’ spinal cords.  Regardless of whether that ends up in the movie or not lets take a look at Batman and his new nemesis Bane.

Bruce Thomas Wayne had the unfortunate luck of witnessing his parents murder when he was a child, an event that birthed his life goal of ridding Gotham City of evil.  Bruce has since evolved into an arrogant billionaire industrialist and notorious playboy by day, and a ruthless masked vigilante by night.  Characterized by his physical prowess and technical ingenuityBatman ‘strikes terror into the hearts of criminals everywhere’.  Indeed Bruce Wayne is a martial arts ‘prodigy’ and excels specifically in japanese jujitsuninjitsuKeysi, and Aikido.  Bold, daring, and audacious with a strict adherence to utility The Caped Crusader is undoubtedly a Promoter Artisan.  Indeed Batman has a thick skin and is a hard-nosed utilitarian, doing whatever it takes to get the job done.  The Dark Knight however knows all too well as most Promoters do, that “he who travels fast, travels alone”.  Until Bane shows up.

Bane spent his childhood and early adult-life in prison, serving a sentence for his fathers crimes.  Bane’s ‘natural abilities’ allowed him to develop ‘extraordinary skills’ within the prison walls including a plethora of brutal martial arts.  Bane has since evolved into a ‘super intelligent world-class fighter’ and a ‘tactical genius’.  Bane is most known for causing a prison break to overwhelm Batman, and then breaking his back while he is weak and tired.  Impulsivefearless, and ridden with brute strengthBane is undoubtedly a Crafter Artisan.  Certainly, Bane like all Crafters communicates primarily through his actions.  Bringing his prison mentality to Gotham City, Bane decided to go after the man that everyone fearedBatman.  Indeed a physical specimen, actor Tom Hardy packed on 30 pounds of muscle to play the role.  Like his fellow Crafters, Bane is ‘fascinated by weapons of all kinds’ and wields them with ‘lethal virtuosity’, taking ‘pride’ in his ‘prowess’.  In other words if I saw this dude on the street, I probably wouldn’t talk sh*t.

Warner Bros. recently announced that fresh new trailers for both The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Dark Knight Rises will be attached to their big holiday release Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows opening December 16th.

Tactical Lust

Young whippersnapper Ashton Kutcher and used-to-be-fox Demi Moore have evidently called it quits, serving as horribly discouraging news to cougars all over the world.  The couple officially announced their divorce on Thursday, but had been allegedly having marital issues for quite some time now.  Despite such heartbreaking news, both camps are said to be “moving full force ahead in terms of work”, which is probably the issue in the first place.  Or maybe it was the fact that she’s almost 50 (49), and he’s like 15 (33).  Or maybe it’s because he cheated on her.  Regardless of what it was, I think the overall message we need to take from this unfortunate situation is that no one should ever marry the guy from Dude, where’s my car?  But then again, maybe they should.  Demi will reportedly be ‘cleaning up’ from the divorce, as their marriage occurred during the peak of Ashton’s career.  Since Demi made most of her money like 5o years ago when she was young, she gets to keep all of that.  Any money made DURING the marriage however is fair game.  Therefore the overall message to ultimately extract from this situation is that cradle-robbing is a good thing and you can even make a lot of money doing it.  Rude, ignorant, and disrespectful comments aside let’s take a look at this former Hollywood power couple.

Ashton Kutcher is indeed at the peak of his career, hauling in about 12 million this year alone from movies, TV residuals, his production company, and his fat new sitcom paycheck.  Ashton has actually become the highest paid sitcom actor at $700,000 per episode after replacing Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men.  Ashton is most known for his breakout role as Michael Kelso in That 70’s Show, and his popular TV show Punk’d in which he pranked other celebrities.  Ashton is also known for his vibrant and loud personality, which he expresses mainly through his highly utilized and highly popular twitter account.  Indeed Ashton’s twitter account was the first to reach one million followers (beating out CNN) and currently boasts more than 8 million.  Highly entertaining, emotionally expressive and extremely playful and fun-lovingAshton Kutcher is undoubtedly a Performer Artisan.  Indeed Ashton lives with a “radiant warmth and festivity” and clearly has “contagious good humor” and an “irrepressible joy of living”.  It’s not all fun and games however, as “the Performers’ talent for enjoying life is healthy for the most part, though it also makes them more subject to temptations than other types.  ESFPs are inclined to be impulsive and self-indulgent, which makes them vulnerable to seduction, giving in easily to the wishes of others, or to the desire of the moment.”  As evidenced of course by Ashton’s infidelity.  Poor Demi!

Demi Guynes Moore was part of the Brat Pack of teenage actors rising to fame in the 1980’s.  In the 1990’s she became the highest paid actress in Hollywood earning a salary of over 10$ million.  Demi is known mostly for defying convention with her highly controversial nude Vanity Fair cover page, and her sexually-charged roles like those in Striptease and Disclosure.  Bold, daring, audacious, and highly enterprising Demi Moore is undoubtedly a Promoter Artisan.  Certainly Demi is “socially sophisticated” and “suave and polished”.  Promoters like Demi are “master manipulators” of the people around them, as: “people are instruments in the hands of Promoters, and they play them artistically.”  As evidenced of course by Demi marrying a young teenage heart-throb half her age in the peak of his career.  Indeed it seems that Demi got the better end of this deal by a long shot, as through Ashton she was able to continue living in the spotlight, have him help raise her kids, and then ends up leaving with a bunch of his money.  Two And A Half Men airs Mondays 9/8c on CBS.
