Bryan Singer will be relenting from the X-Men franchise for a short period as his next contractual project is an adaptation of Jules Verne‘s classic novel: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Apocalypse a.k.a. ‘En Sabah Nur’ is a ruthless incarnation of Darwinism, simply seeking to augment or enforce natural selection and remove those who are weak, unnecessary, or those who are slowly but surely destroying their own planet.

Magneto

‘Magneto’ was born Max Eisenhardt, a Jew in Nazi Germany.  His entire family was slaughtered and he was sent to Auschwitz death camp where he had to serve as a Sonderkommando to survive.

While in Auschwitz Max meets a girl named Magda; they survive the Holocaust, get married, and have a daughter named Anya.  Max incurs the wrath of an angry mob who traps his family in a burning house, his mutant power manifests and he massacres the mob.

Max then becomes Erik Lehnsherr and makes his way to Israel where he meet Charles Xavier.  Xavier and him collude about the future between human and mutant kind, before realizing that they don’t 100% see eye-to-eye on the subject and split paths.

Seeing firsthand how humans can treat those that are different Max dubs himself ‘Magneto’ and resolves to forge a viable future for him and his ilk.  He founds the Brotherhood of Mutants, a guerrilla force giving refuge and purpose to disgruntled and discontent mutants.

Magneto and the Brotherhood’s sentiments begin to clash with that of Xavier and the X-Men, and the two forces brace one another on a multitude of occasions.  Throughout these series of conflicts Magneto has several close encounters with death, and seeks solitude on what becomes his redemption island Asteroid M.  He uses Asteroid M to lament, heal, and augment his genetics all of which change his perspective on existence.

After having his political machinations thwarted several times by Xavier and the X-Men, Xavier passes away.  Before passing he implores Max to find peace with humanity and guide the X-Men towards a brighter future.  Max reluctantly agrees, becomes Headmaster of the X-Men and has somewhat of a “reform” period in which he attempts to right many of his past misgivings.

Quote1 Right now, the world doesn’t need heroes. It needs villains. Quote2–Max Eisenhardt (Earth-616)

“Our roles are nothing more than how the times choose to cast us.”–Max Eisenhardt (Earth-616)

” I find scars are far more vivid reminders than memories.”–Max Eisenhardt (Earth-616)

” Everything I’ve done… all those terrible things… the pain I’ve inflicted… on others… on you… was to make the world a better place for mutants. When people look back at my actions… through the lens of history… I want them to see I was right. I wanted mutants to rule. Now… I just want them to survive.”–Max Eisenhardt (Earth-616)

The time for subtlety is passing. Now is the time for change.”–Max Eisenhardt (Earth-616)

My name is Max Eisenhardt. I’ve been a Sonderkommando at Auschwitz for almost two years. I watched thousands of men, women, and children walk to their deaths. I pulled their bodies from the gas chambers. I dug out their teeth so the Germans could take their gold. And I carried them to the ovens, where I learned how to combine a child’s body with an old man’s to make them burn better. I saw my fellow workers buried alive under an avalanche of rotting corpses. I saw thousands of murdered people burning in giant outdoor pits. I have seen at least a quarter million dead human beings with my own eyes…and I couldn’t save a single one…”–Max Eisenhardt (Earth-616)

Farewell, my old friend. Whatever comes, I and mine will not go like lambs to the slaughter — but like tigers!”–Max Eisenhardt (Earth-616)

Storm

Ororo Monroe was born from a long line of African priestesses in Cairo, Egypt.  Tragically Ororo’s parents died in a plane crash several years later and she was buried under the rubble, developing claustrophobia.

Ororo managed to escape the rubble of her home with nothing but her mother’s ancestral ruby.  Homeless and orphaned, Ororo was found by a gang of street urchins and soon became a prized pupil, excelling in picking both pockets and locks.

Ororo leaves Cairo in search of answers.  During her travels, she is forced to kill an assailant and afterwards vows to never take another human life.

Ororo then wanders for thousands of miles across the Sahara Desert, during which her psionic attunement to nature proliferates.  She then meets T’Challa, a prince of the African nation of Wakanda, and the two develop a romantic relationship.  However, T’Challa’s duties as a prince prevent them from further exploring their burgeoning mutual attraction.

Ororo then goes on a pilgrimage to her ancestors’ homeland on the Serengeti Plain in Kenya.  She is taken in by an elderly tribal woman named Ainet who teaches her to be responsible with her blossoming powers.

Storm then has an encounter with and is soon recruited by Xavier’s X-Men.  Xavier explains to Ororo that she was is not a “goddess” but a mutant and as such she has a responsibility to use her abilities to help the world just as she had helped the local tribes. Ororo accepts Xavier’s offer and is given the codename “Storm”.

After serving with the team for many years, Storm was appointed leader of the X-Men following the departure of Cyclops.  After a long stint as the commander-in-chief of the X-Men, Ororo returns to Africa and marries T’Challa a.k.a. Black Panther.   She then becomes essentially a mutant Ambassador and diplomat, striving towards a peaceful coexistence with humanity.

Credulous, mystical, empathetic, and highly attuned to nature Storm is an Idealist.

“Let’s see who is truly divine.”–Ororo Munroe (Earth-616)

Professor Xavier dreamed of a world where mutants and humans could live in harmony… where we no longer needed to be afraid. I have tried for so long to keep that dream alive. We all have. That is what the X-Men were. But now, finally, I am starting to see that we failed. The dream is dead. Did it die with Scott, or was that merely the final blow? It doesn’t matter now. What matters is that we are still here. We are still alive. I try to appear unshakable. I try to show that there is nothing to fear and the X-Men will endure, like we always have. I keep telling myself that we have to keep fighting. We have to keep trying. I just — I wish there was some sign. Some sign that I’m doing the right thing. Some sign that we will be all right. But what I get is not a sign of hope. It is a warning. The ground beneath X-Havenbegins to shake and I am scared. I am scared that there is no longer a light to guide us out of the darkness. I am scared that I haven’t saved us by bringing us here, but rather, I’ve led us to the brink. I’m scared that this is really the end.”–Ororo Munroe (Earth-616)

Quote1You counter despair with hope. You strive forever for the best you are capable to be! Therein lies the victory!Quote2 –Ororo Munroe (Earth-616)

When I was just a girl, I called myself goddess… and I lived in the sky. Sometimes I wonder why I ever left. I’m a mutant with the power to control the weather. Here’s where I belong… every nerve connected with the wind, the clouds, the vapor.”–Ororo Munroe (Earth-616)

” We are both damaged goods — that is part of what makes us… human.”–Ororo Munroe (Earth-616)

I have no powers, my body cannot fly. But I no longer mind, for in my heart and soul — where it truly matters — I soar higher than the stars!”–Ororo Munroe (Earth-616)

“To what we stand and fight for, my friend — to life!”–Ororo Munroe (Earth-616)

” I am a woman, a mutant, a thief, an X-Men, a lover, a wife, a queen. I am all these things. I am Storm, and for me, there are no such things as limits.”–Ororo Munroe (Earth-616)

“If mutants — if we X-Men — truly represent the hope of the future… then we must prove ourselves worthy of it.”–Ororo Munroe (Earth-616)

Angel

Warren Worthington III was born into a wealthy family, and attended a prestigious east coast boarding school.  One night there is a fire in Warren’s dormitory, he sprouts wings from his shoulder blades and uses them to save many students lives.

Acquiring a taste for philanthropy, Warren soon became the costumed crime-fighting Avenging Angel and attracted the attention of Professor Xavier who recruited him as a founding member of the heroic mutant X-Men team.

Warren inherited a family fortune and used a portion of it to fund a Los Angeles based super-team, the Champions.  After the Champions disbanded, Warren eventually rejoined the X-Men.

Later, Angel joined the Defenders when that group reorganized under the guidance of his compatriot Beast.  Angel served as financier for the new group but they disbanded after most of the members died in battle.

Angel then reunited with the original X-Men in forming X-Factor, a more militarized and underground version of the organization.

Warren loses his wings in a conflict and is rescued by the eternal mutant Apocalypse, who offers to restore them.  Desperate, Warren agrees and through genetic manipulation, he is turned blue and given razor-sharp metal wings.

After breaking free of Apoc Warren then returns to the X-Men as a reservist, his responsibilities as head of Worthington Industries taking precedence.  Ending his relationship with Psylocke, Warren later committed himself to the X-Men full-time, becoming team leader.

After Professor X was publicly exposed as a mutant, Warren took a more public role in his business activities, speaking to the G8 summit about mutants in the world economy.
