Well-Rounded Wizardry

Happy Easter!  The spring is officially upon us my dears and with it comes the grand opening of Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter in Leavesden, England, 18 miles north of London.  On the heels of the smashing success of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando, our dear and beloved friends at Warner Bros. Studios have decided to make the place where the most successful film series of all time was shot available to the general public.  In other words if you ever feel the urge to go hang out at Hogwarts Castle or Diagon Alley, you now have the ability to do so:

And wouldn’t you know it, but the Four Houses of Hogwarts match up right on the nose with the four temperaments.  Much like the sorting hat matches up right on the nose with the Keirsey Temperament Sorter.  I know…. Right!??  Let’s take a look.
The sorting hat is a sentient Hogwarts artifact which magically determines to which of the four school Houses each new student is to be assigned.  The sorting hat makes such a decision by reading your thoughts for a few moments as to get a glimpse into your true nature.  Each of the four houses of Hogwarts (SlytherinHufflepuffRavenclaw and Gryffindor) has its own noble history and unique character, much like the four basic personality types (Artisan, Guardian, Rational, Idealist) have the same.

Slytherin is one of the four houses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and is traditionally home to students who exhibit such traits as cunning, resourcefulness and ambition. Its emblematic animal is the snake and its colours are green and silver.  Slytherins are infamously power hungry, shrewd, strong leaders, and achievement-oriented.

Or perhaps in Slytherin,
You’ll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means,
To achieve their ends.

Hufflepuff is one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and is the most inclusive among the four houses; valuing hard work, patience, loyalty, and fair play rather than a particular aptitude in its members.  Its emblematic animal is the badger, and yellow and black are its colours.  Hufflepuffs are infamously friendly, honest, rather impartial, and modest about their accomplishments.

You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true,
And unafraid of toil

— Ravenclaw is one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, characterized by their witlearning, and wisdom.  Its house colours are blue and bronze, and its emblematic animal is the eagle.  Ravenclaws prize intellect in its members and tend to be academically motivated and talented students.

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you’ve a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind.

Gryffindor is one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, with particular characteristics of students sorted into Gryffindor being courage and chivalry.  Its emblematic animal is the lion, and its colours are scarlet and gold.  Gryffindors are generally regarded as brave, though sometimes to the point of recklessness.

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart

  1. I thought about it after reading Deathly Hallows and came to slightly different conclusions. What Rowling seems to have done here is she employs similar strategy as the Keirsey method in dividing the 16 types into 4 temperaments. The difference is she chooses J-P instead of S-N as the principal dichotomy and then divides each subgroup using 2 different secondary dichotomies (F-T for Ps and S-N for Js). That way what results is the main antagonism of Revolutionaries (Griffindors, Slytherins) vs Conservatives (Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw) doubled by Hogwarts vs Ministry and then it’s Altruist Revolutionaries (Griffindors) vs. Egoist Revolutionaries (Slytherins) fighting it out with divided support from Abstract Conservatives (Ravenclaws) and Concrete Conservatives (Hufflepuffs). Idealist half of Conservatives supports Griffindors and Pragmatic one roots for Slytherins.

The exact type distribution according to this theory is as follows:
    – Idealist Revolutionaries (Griffindors): ISFP (Harry, Hagrid), ESFP (Ron, Sirius), INFP(Neville), ENFP (Hermione, Dumbledore)
    – Pragmatic Revolutionaries (Slytherins) : ISTP(Crabbe&Goyle), ESTP(Draco), INTP(Snape), ENTP(Voldemort)
    – Concrete Conservatives (Hufflepuffs): ISFJ, ESFJ(Cedric), ISTJ, ESTJ
    – Abstract Conservatives (Ravenclaws): INFJ(Luna), ENFJ, INTJ, ENTJ
