The final trailer has dropped for The Dark Knight Rises and I literally just got goosebumps. Ya. I’m a nerd. Christian Bale will be reprising his role as the caped crusader while bloody brit actor Tom Hardy will be playing primary villain Bane. Other newcomers include: Anne Hathaway as a mysterious Selina Kyle a.k.a. Catwoman, while Joseph Gordon Levitt plays John Blake or a possible Robin, and finally the beautiful Marion Cotillard plays Miranda Tate or a potential Talia Al Ghul. Big Boss Man Christopher Nolan has indeed done a good job keeping most of this stuff underwraps, as the film is his swan song to the Batman franchise. The film’s reportedly epic ending is on the utmost of DL, to the point that only Nolan and four other people know what it is. Why does this movie look so frikkin cool you ask? Because it’s about a good ol’ fashioned Artisan dogfight.
“What Artisans do most and best is work on their immediate environs in a tactical way. Tactics is the art of making moves to better one’s position in the here and now, whether these moves are dabbing oils on a canvas, flying in rough weather, dishing off the basketball on a fast-break, or skirmishing on the battlefield. Indeed, SP battle leaders are no different from SP painters, pilots, or point guards: they are always scanning for opportunities, always looking for the best angle of approach, and so are able to come up with that particular action which at the moment gives them the greatest advantage, and that brings success.” — Please Understand Me II, p. 38
Bruce Thomas Wayne had the unfortunate luck of witnessing his parents murder when he was a child, an event that birthed his life goal of ridding Gotham City of evil. Bruce has since evolved into an arrogant billionaire industrialist and notorious playboy by day, and a ruthless masked vigilante by night. Characterized by his physical prowess and technical ingenuity, Batman ‘strikes terror into the hearts of criminals everywhere’. Indeed Bruce Wayne is a martial arts ‘prodigy’ and spent his youth on a global sojourn acquiring a variety of useful skills and tactics including chemistry, criminology, forensics, martial arts, gymnastics, disguise, and escape artistry. Bold, daring, and audacious with a strict adherence to utility The Caped Crusader is a great example of a Promoter Artisan. Indeed Batman has a thick skin and is a hard-nosed utilitarian, doing whatever it takes to get the job done. The Dark Knight knows all too well however as most Promoters do, that “he who travels fast, travels alone”.
Bane spent his childhood and early adult-life in prison, serving a sentence for his fathers crimes. Bane’s ‘natural abilities’ allowed him to develop ‘extraordinary skills’ within the prison walls including a plethora of brutal martial arts. Bane has since evolved into a ‘super intelligent world-class fighter’ and a ‘tactical genius’. Bane is most known for causing a prison break to overwhelm Batman, and then breaking his back while he is weak and tired. Impulsive, fearless, and ridden with brute strength, Bane is a classic Crafter Artisan. Certainly, Bane like all Crafters communicates primarily through his actions. Bringing his prison mentality to Gotham City, Bane decided to go after the man that everyone feared: Batman. Indeed a physical specimen, actor Tom Hardy packed on 30 pounds of muscle to play the role. Like his fellow Crafters, Bane is ‘fascinated by weapons of all kinds’ and wields them with ‘lethal virtuosity’. Like his enhancement drug venom, his army of mercenaries, or perhaps his ‘doomsday device’.

I respectfully have to disagree with Batman being an Artisan. There is no way Batman is anything other than a rational, more specifically a mastermind I’ve read, seen and done plenty of research over the years over Batman. He always plans ahead for every situation and has contingency plans just in case any of the justice league goes rogue. Masterminds Try to anticipate every contingency, and never set off on their current project without a Plan A firmly in mind, but they are always prepared to switch to Plan B or C or D if need be. He has degrees in criminal science, forensics, computer science, engineering, biology, advanced chemistry and mastered 127 styles of martial arts. He’s quite literally a genius and there’s no way an artisan would have the patience to educate themselves to such a degree. Its easy to confuse an INTJ (Mastermind) with an artisan because Rationals are utilitarian in going after what they want, which means that they consider the usefulness of their tools as more important than their social acceptability-whether they should be used, are moral, are legal, are legitimate. Not that Rationals prefer to be immoral, illegal, or illegitimate in their tool usage. They do not refuse to cooperate with their social groups, but like their utilitarian cousins, the Artisans, they see pleasing others and obeying rules as secondary considerations, coming only after they have determined how well their intended means will work in achieving their ends. However, it must be emphasized that the Artisan’s concrete utility is different from the Rational’s abstract utility. Where SPs are interested in effective operations, NTs are interested in efficient operations. If a given operation promises to be too costly for the results it gets, that is, inefficient though effective, the NT will look for operations that are likely to take less effort to get the same result.
Well, clearly you are more well versed on The Dark Knight then I am so I will go ahead and concede that you are correct and that he is a Mastermind. The problem with typing a fictional character, more specifically superheroes is that often times their creators want them to have it all. So while Batman is bold, daring, audacious, a ladies man, a skilled martial artists, etc. He also brings to the table a strong science aspect, being well versed in the subjects you mentioned like chemistry, forensics, biology, engineering, etc. The fact of the matter is that in real life, very rarely is someone able to acquire all of these skill-sets, or very rarely does someone have the cognitive capacity to have the patience to acquire such a wide variety of skill-sets. This is what I believe to be the essence of temperament. You see personality is about cognitive capacity. I believe at the end of the day, people only essentially have the cognitive capacity to embrace one of the four basic temperaments. Some people push themselves to be well-rounded and try to delve into the sciences, while also being very loving, try their hand at fashion, the arts, and be well-grounded at the same time. At the end of the day these people get over exhausted, and it is my firm belief that people will ALWAYS ultimately revert to the temperament that they were born with. I think that humanity for whatever reason has settled into these four basic modes of thinking. Batman may be versatile, but he is at the end of the day, a fictional superhero. The question is, when push comes to shove, which cognitive template does he ultimately resort to? Artisan, or Rational?
At the end of the day, he definitely resorts to being a Rational. Perhaps Nolan’s depiction paints him to be more an Artisan. But the Batman of the comics and animated series is definitely at the end of the day a rational.
