Speaking of amazing books I strongly recommend The Golden Age by John C. Wright. Truely incredible. (I guess I'm kind of biased because it brings up massive philosophical questions and thats just what I'm into.)

Sorry, as a Rational, I don't do fiction anymore. ;) It's too simple. And philosophy should be practiced only post-hoc, as a clean-up to science, about a hundred years afterwords. :ugeek:

Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future. Niels Bohr

This is not the typical fiction, at all. It doesn't try to predict the future so much as show the inevitable, that is to say it does not attempt to really criticise modern soceity or anything like that but quite literally the author sets up a perfect futuristic society in which simply the depletion of universal energy creates an unavoidable "slow death" in which each individual is fully aware of.

How can you know that science is even viable if not for philososphy?

How can you know that science is even viable if not for philosophy?

Sorry, that rhetorical question makes little sense, for philosophy cannot make anything viable.

Science is shown "viable" or "non-viable" by technology.

The history of philosophy is to a great extent that of a certain clash of human temperaments. – William James

Two recommendations for you:
1. philosophy -- Karl Popper.
2. With a lot of arrogance: my paper Towards the Physics of Death

A fixed point.

Those who want to confuse the issue and make it fancy with "philosophy" some have used the phrase "Omega Point"

I follow Ray Kurzweil for entertainment and he has used the phrase "the Singularity"-- of course NOBODY knows what kind of fixed point our Metametaman will attain.

So... its kind of like, progress technology so that when various problems arise there will be the technological means to deal with them? I guess what I'm saying is with philosophy an individual or a society can better orient themselves by discarding a variety of "false-problems", like free will for example: Free will doesn't exist thus punishment based revenge is invalid.

I don't see an essential difference between Philosophy and Religion, and I don't see any essential difference between Religion and Politics for most people.

Using philosophy to guide your life with some sort if spiritual zeal I find quite silly, however, there are still certain benefits to discarding inconsistant beliefs, or simply taking a step back and understanding the implications of certain beliefs.
