I think this is a good example of the adage of:

The Road to Hell is Paved with Good Intentions
Within which edge of chaos are you?

Indeed—and it serves equally well as an example of

the Law of Unintended Consequences.

He doesn't have his freedom, except for mocking the system in a letter. Why is he provocative? I'm not sure he feels all that good.

Yes, (and in no way, shape or form I condone his crimes). There are no winners in any of this.

I haven't done it with any seriousness yet, but I want to know, am interested in the representation of the makeup of criminals incarcerated. My understanding from our Australian jails is that the majority of females incarcerated are drug related crimes. That I cam across as an incidental to another piece of research, I'm wondering if male crime shows similar patterns, and I also need to get my hands on 'Why They Kill' (Richard Rhodes), and The Creation of Dangerous Violent Criminals (Lonnie Athens).

I want to understand all this better.
I would start with stripping down to what fundamentally informs my life, which is that I'm a seeker on the path...where I stand spiritually is, steadfastly, on a path about love.. (Bell Hooks)
